About the author

Father and SonMatt Zainea is a teaching pastor at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church in Rockford, MI. He’s been on staff for over ten years. Prior to this he spent ten years in the banking industry. Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Michigan State University, an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and a masters degree in historical theology from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. He has been married twenty years and has five children.

Qualifications as a blogger: He owns a computer, has access to the internet and can spell words well enough for spell check to figure out the rest.  Other than that, there don’t seem to be any qualifications needed, so he is qualified.

Hobbies: He enjoys reading, playing basketball and gardening.  His kids eat up most of his time so his hobbies don’t get much attention. He also hates television. Unfortunately, hating something doesn’t qualify as a hobby, otherwise this section would be quite long.

Political Achievements: Matt had a stellar political career for a time.  He was his high school’s freshman class president. Unfortunately, his political career stopped here. Jealousy and political infighting in his party, which led to the great food fight of ’78, left Matt jaded and disenchanted. Then came the infamous Majorie Dewinsky scandal where Matt denied having a crush on her. His denials hit a crescendo when he stood in front of the student body in the cafeteria at lunch and announced that he “had never held hands with that girl, Majorie Dewinsky”. Unfortunately, she had saved a blue mitten she wore while holding his hand and it was covered with lint from his favorite sweater. He left politics and vowed not to return unless the general public begged him to run for US Senate, because that would be a sweet job.

Athletic Achievements: Matt was the outstanding intramural athlete in eighth grade and won a handful of Gus Macker three-on-three trophies. He really wishes there were more to put here. It is not because of a lack of effort. Lacking skill to perform, he is now coaching. He coaches his son’s second grade soccer team.  His ability to grasp the intricacies of second grade soccer is nothing short of remarkable. He quickly mastered the three rules needed for this sport and is renowned for getting his players going in the correct direction most of the time. His coaching prowess has led many to mention him in the same breath as Rockne, Lombardi, and Knight. Of course these are Billy Rockne, Chris Lombardi, and Bruce Knight of local little league fame. Actually, they weren’t very good either. Maybe that’s why they are mentioned with our blogger.

Leadership Achievements: Matt has also served as president of ….well….er….apparently he’s never been president of anything except his high school freshman class. He has served on the board of directors for….ah….er….I guess he is not on any boards either. However, he might be president of something or on some sort of board in the future. We’ll keep you posted.

Literary Achievements: Matt hasn’t written any books, but he’s thought about it and he’s read a bunch. He’s completed Moby Dick and The Brothers Karamazov (took 3 tries) which are quite an accomplishment. If you want to know how to fillet a whale or what happens to the Karamazov brothers in the end, just call him.

That’s probably more than you wanted to know about him so we will stop here.

  4. You are the President of this blog. And you are right. Having no qualifications makes you highly qualified to have a blog.

    Wishing you the best.

  5. Love this, Matt! This is EXACTLY why you should start a blog! Still getting your soccer digs in, I see. . . I’m surprised we didn’t hear more about Notre Dame here, but I don’t blame you after last week’s game. . . Anyway, I’m looking forward your blog with great anticipation!

  6. I love the Majorie Dewinsky story, the sweater lint just makes it; refreshing humility, looking forward to returning here.
